1:220 RX-178 Gundam Mark II
« on: December 11, 2008, 04:31:38 am »
Profile
Name: RX-178 Gundam Mark II
Grade/ Size: 1:220 (snap fit)
Modeling leve: Advanced
Parts: 40 parts no polycaps
Inner frame/ transformable: No

In between my heavy projects and doing a lot of night shifts at work I picked up this kit for a few dollars just to past the time at work. I also splashed out for a set of 1:200 architectural figures for a small diorama. After opening the box I was very disappointed...

Like most Bandai kits the pieces were in good condition but with flash marks from the moulding process. The hands were sculpted very poorly; much detail was missing compared to the box art and a few surface flaws appeared. I had the kit snapped together in less than an hour, which holds together quite well without glue but the whole kit was a single colour like the FG RX-78...

The kit came with a beam rifle, shield, bazooka and beam saber. The kit looks very toy like and had very little limb movement. Seam lines are present thought out the total surface area of the kit including hard to reach places. I do not recommend this to be a good hobby kit and will require a lot of work to be at display quality...

I'm interested in seeing what these babies look like "OOB". Can you take a picture of that one, snapped and unpainted?
When the going gets tough, the weird go pro.

The fact that this model is molded in only one color might turn off some people, but you have to remember that this model was originally released back in the 80's. It was considered normal to have to paint your models back then. And that also applies as to why the articulation wasn't that great and why the sculpt wasn't the best looking thing on earth. I like it though. Personally, I love the old-school models from the eighties. They have a certain charm to them. But then again, I have a tendency to love stuff that other peple consider pure garbage.
Were you ever afraid of blacking out for some reason, then waking up in a street alley, naked, with a traffic cone shoved up your rear end?

My friend,
That is the very reason why I got this kit and plan to build this baby into something cool. Due to its size I hide it at work and play with at night shifts. You have to admit this little guy is kinda cute...

I also have an old 1:100 no grade Zaku II laying around to be used at a base for a MG Hyaku Shiki. All kits old or new have a destiny of some sort...
