Plus doesn't every main Gundam pilot in the series all "peacekeeper"? Kira, Athrun, Herro, Amuro, Kamille (before he goes wacko), Judea, etc. the list goes on...take note that all pilots of the Gundam series initially does not want to fight (heck, even Loran used the Turn A as a washing machine
)
I don't know - I mean, I also find the pacifist kick in some of these Gundam pilots
real annoying... The fact that it's turned up so frequently in Gundam's history doesn't make me like it any better, you know?
In Loran's case I think it played out decently - he had good reasons for being sympathetic to both sides of the conflict, and he
did fight seriously. The episodes surrounding the launch of the Will Game come to mind.
Where the pacifist kick really drives me nuts is when the characters take it too far, or their decision to "fight war nonviolently" works out a little too nicely... Examples of this include 08th MS Team (the direction of that story would have worked a lot better if it had ended as a tragedy, I think.), the second half of Wing or the second half of Seed (and all of Seed Destiny) in which Freedom fought all enemies as if they were not dangerous, and Judau from ZZ, who was one of those characters for whom the world just seemed to revolve around him a lot of the time.
Amuro and Camille - less so. In both cases they clearly
didn't like killing people, and weren't happy about having done it - but they took combat seriously, and shot to kill. I think Loran falls into this camp. And do you remember how Amuro ultimately dealt with this sense of conflict? Toward the end of Gundam his conclusion was basically "this killing doesn't solve anything because we're not killing the right people." - hardly a pacifist stance.
Gundam 00 has thankfully been quite free of this - it's one of the things I really enjoy about that show. The characters are on the "eliminate all war" kick, but they haven't lost touch with the fact that they've chosen a very violent way to get it done - the fundamental hypocrisy there isn't lost on any of the characters, either.
