Toy Reviews!
« on: October 24, 2008, 10:04:01 pm »
This thread is for anyone to review a toy or collectible that they've found and wish to share with the rest of the world.

I'll start with something I've had on preorder for a long time. Masterpiece Voltron.

I like this version since it's not only 1/3 of the price of the original, but it's also more durable and has had many of the issues that the original had resolved. The first release of Masterpiece Voltron had issues with weak plastic and the metal in the lions being to heavy for the combined form to be supported. Toynami looked at these issues and removed the metal in favor of solid plastic. The chrome has also been removed.

I want to take a minute to talk about the box. It's moderate in it's size and is quite plain. It has pics of Voltron and the individual lions on a black background, but that's about it. It also has a handle so it can be held like a suitcase. Once open you'll find all the lions laid out like the original GoLion box. It's still plain with all the focus being on the toy. I like that. Something unique to mention is that the lions are held in styofoam. It's been ages since I've seen something stored in styrofoam due to it not being environmentally friendly. This set was designed to not only be cool, but also hit nostalgia from all angles.

Each of the lions are basically updated representaitons of the originals. They all feature head articulation and the legs on each of the "limb" lions can spread out a little more than the old Matchbox one.

The combined Voltron mode is very impressive. It's very sturdy and holds up quite well compared to the original masterpiece release. The removal of the chrome was also a nice touch as it allowed more details to be seen and helped it have more of an anime look.

I really like that the Blazing Sword has a peg in the handle that can attach to a hole in either the red or green lions mouth. This helps keep the sword from flailing about if you ever decide to do the obligatory "whoosh" around the room. The shield also has this feature.

Overall, I don't have any complaints about this figure and the one complaint I do have is very minute. The red and green lion heads do not launch on this version, but the articulation makes up for it. The legs are still a little stiff like the old Matchbox version, but I don't think that issue can ever be resolved because of how he combines. At 1/3 of the price of the metal release I'd say this is a good deal and worth every penny.

If you're a Voltron fan, you'll definitely want to pick this up. I'll post pics of mine later.
A boxed model kit is like your dreams. They'll never be what you want them to be unless you make it happen.
