Some peeps use clear rods (acrylic)(i think). I use metal tubing or plastic tubing. Just need to make sure though that what you use will hold the weight though of course. Find a base, drill a hole, pop in the tube, and of course have a secure hole in the model too. And tada you have a standing display

or you may hang em, instead of making them stand with a stand, using some thin nylon threads and a couple of thumbtacks^_^
be careful what you wish for, because you might just even get it... aw!

You can custom build your Gundam stand using Tamiya Pla Plate or 1mm to 1.75mm thick Polystyrene Plates. I've seen others even make them look like parts of a space ship or hangar for a more realistic and cooler look.

I've used all kinds of material. Flat rocks, wood (branches or precut), PVC piping, metal tubes, plastic tubes, etc. I usaully go with what looks good as the base to compliment the model. I've drilled holes in stones glued in a tube and stuck the other end were the sun don't shine on the model. Even done one using just a heavy paperweight and brass tubing. Options are as limited as you're imagination.
