Help Building Clear Armor Gundam
« on: July 05, 2010, 02:46:33 am »
I just bought the HG 1/100 Destiny Gudam vs Infinite Justice Gundam set, which came in Clear Armor. I just thought it look unique and it was on sale, it was for $30 which would be the same as buying only one of those two gundams but with normal armor.
Heres a picture of it

Is there any anything that can be done while building the gundam to make it look "better". Not talking about mods but maybe possible to hide seamlines and such? Cause i have no experience in building clear kits, nor have i really seen a "professionally" built one either.

Any links/help would be appreciated.

Im gonna be honest and say that hiding seamlines for special coated and clear parted kits would be hard if they were to use the same molding technique as the original ones. the exceptions would be kits like the akatsuki and hyaku shikis which they come with gold coating and they would be moded in a way to hide those seamlines.

the problem with this kis is that the likely chance of showing stressmarks when youre trimming off nubs  but if you know how to trim nub marks off parts, then youll have little difficulty with such a kit. if youre unsure with the kit you want to buy, do a bit of research before the buy.

I've noticed that when you cut the part off the sprue. Instead use snips in reverse (flush side out) and snip the gate closer to the sprue than the part turning then after you have the part out and gate pieces still there turn snips around and flush cut against the part. I've noticed that when snipping the gates there is a small crystallization thing happening on the flush side of the cut which leads to having white-ish scaring at the point of separation. I've found that snipping in this fashion reduces the crystal effect and leaving less white marring to be removed or buffed out. Hope I explained this understandably. Thank you for the viewing.  ::)

one more thing about this forum is that, other modelers spray this clear parts only the inside part - NOT including the front - the result is quite a okay... see and try some. ;D

the crystallization you're talking about is from the plastic the kit is made from..

its really hard/brittle solid plastic, not the flexible-ish kind normal kits have, so when you snip it, instead of cutting the piece out, you end up cracking it off, causing the plastic to go white.

its pretty annoying building this kit lol, now that i finally got around to work on it.. it looks really nice, i gave up on "perfection", the sprues will almost always leave a mark, its just how the material is. Cutting it with a knife leaves less of a mark but the gate/sprue is really thick..... feels like im cutting some connector joints sometimes

What I do for clear parts is.

Step 1: when you cut your part out of the tree make sure you are about an 1/8 of a inch from the piece that way it wont damage the part.

Step 2: use a saw to carefully cut the 1/8 inch spur of you part and use an x-acto if needed to do any clean up.

Step 3: you need 2 buy an finger nail buffing kit. you can fine them anywhere that makeup is sold. it comes with three sanding sticks a coarse stick, a fine stick, and a polishing stick. if you use them in that order and take you time you should end up with some nice results.

Good luck I hope it helps.
in battle the winner isn't always decided by who has the better strategy, but but who has the bigger gun and most ammo.
