1:100 Zaku Kai project
« on: February 12, 2008, 09:40:53 pm »
This has been going on forever and will likely continue for some time.  But I'm building the best MS in all of Gundam and I'm not accepting compromises, so I am anxious to make progress but I am content to be slow.  :D

All the WIP information is collected on the project page, here - I will likely update the thread from time to time as well as things come together.

Looks as ugly as ever, but in the best possible way. Ugly in that I'm not a fan of the design, and best in that it's shaping up quite nicely so far. I expected it to be further along by now, but these kinds of things take time.

Yeah, I build real slow.  I took like the better part of a year (each) to build my Strike and Wing Zero - those weren't OOB but they were just kit builds with a little custom work...  and the problem with this project in particular is that there have been all kinds of false starts with the construction - this is the third backpack I've built, the fifth chest block, the second chest core - and the first head, though if I decide it's less work to start over than to fix the little crooked aspects of the current head sculpt - then I'll start over on the head, too.

I expect I'll get faster at this whole construction thing as I get more practice.  All those times I built and rebuilt the chest, backpack, and chest core were good practice at building blocky shapes precisely and consistently...  though with so many of the parts being more curvy in nature I expect I'm going to have another learning curve as I start to tackle more of those parts...

Thanks for the comments!

I build slow, too! But in my opinion the slower the pace the better the product!

My first serious attempt at drawing up the plans was in late 2005 and I started building parts in late 2006...

Now that's a serious commitment. It looks like it's shaping up nicely. And the important thing is that you're satisfied with it. I've seen scratchbuilds that take far longer, and they're always worth it!

I wish you the best of luck with the Zaku.  It is hands down my favorite design of the famous hose nose and look forward to seeing your project complete.

I just started another part:

Instead of building it out of poly putty and sanding it down like I did with the head part, I rolled out epoxy putty and layered it on top of a clay template.  Another technique from the almighty scratch build manual...  I think it worked pretty well, though obviously it still needs more work...

You are still working on this...?

Lol, I'm just messing around, I never commented on the rest, so better late than never?

First, you are like, the Zaku guru, your research and planning into this is amazing, and I love the head, but I think the body looks super chunky. (Though, you give a tone of reasoning as to why XD) I guess I'll wait to see how it all pans out in the end... about 2 more years? joke joke

You have put a lot of effort into this project so far and I wish you all the best. Your research is so detailed to the point its almost professional (or is it?). I also agree with you regarding the psychological barrier of scratch building which is really interesting. I will surely enjoy watching your process to this task, happy modeling...

If you mean the "Other Renditions" page...  I don't know, I think I may have just thrown that together to bash other people's builds.  :D  The Suku-Suku scratch is the only one I hold in any high regard, the rest I mostly just rip on.

I think my rigorous approach to this thing is one way I deal with a lack of confidence in the actual construction.  I figure if I plan the ever-loving crap out of it, then I don't need to worry about reaching a point where I've built something and suddenly decide it doesn't look right.  (The Blender model is very helpful in that regard - being able to look at things from any angle I like, pose it, etc. before actually building stuff - reaching that level of confidence makes it easier to build with confidence - as long as I follow my plans I'm sure it'll look good.  Plus it sometimes serves as a way to let me feel I've accomplished something even if I haven't built any parts.  :D

As for it looking chunky - honestly there are times I feel that way, too.  If you look on Scope-eye where I wrote about the upcoming HGUC Zaku Kai, and posted my Blender model for comparison - I think my Blender model doesn't look its best in that shot.  Some of the poses where I try things like kneeling and so on, I think my design isn't especially well suited (aesthetically or mechanically) to that stuff, either.  From that perspective I can appreciate what they've done with the HGUC...  But rather than try to tweak my design to improve the looks in some of those odd shots, I've decided to go with what I've got.  I designed it to fit the lineart, and I think it mostly does, and generally I think it looks good that way...

More work on the shoulder armor:

Update

I'm trying to make the two halves of the shoulder armor match each other better and also match the plans better (I made a few mistakes in my templates) and I've made a lot of progress on the spikes...

Not an update to the model itself, but I've just made my first animation (a camera spin) using the 3-D Zaku model I made in Blender...

Still not an update to the model (though I have been working on it - coming up with shoulder joints that will work the way I want and still be easy to recast...) - I've done a couple more animations - check it out...
