Lately I've been having the same issue because its real hot down here. Once I brought the brush a little closer to the piece the gritty texture stopped appearing. My case was text book fine orange peel, hope this helps...

The reason both of you were having this problem I believe is that you need to thin your paint more. It's drying before it ever hits your model. Thus the grainy texture and why it works close up. Thinner paint will travel farther without drying, the thinner is your locomotive agent.  Try thinning your paint until you find a working paint:thinner ratio. It may be different depending on temperature or humidity. Hope this helps.

thanx r.c. im using two paints as usual on my model - the mr. hobby paint acrylic and the Gaia color... which i mixed with Mr. hobby thinner and leveling thinner.... usually i do the ratio 2:2:1, means 2 paints, 2 thinner and 1 leveling thinner.... hmmm, any ideas the proper mix? do i have a wrong ratio for it?

please advice.... thanx in advance.  ;)

I'll give more thinner a try during warmer weather. I never thought to use different ratios in different weather conditions. The joys of airbrushing, thanks for the heads up man  ;D
