1/100 MG Cairn Freya
« on: January 19, 2010, 03:46:23 am »
I wanted to take a break from my Gelbrecht for a night, and I'm going to paint my custom mecha at one time, (when it is definitely warmer) I decided to do a line drawing of one of my next projects.  This is going to be a frame called the Cairn Freya.  This frame is to be piloted by a young frail teenager named 3, who has been the subject of constant experiments since her early childhood.  One such experiment is the use of nanomachine implants which help to extend the neural link with her mecha.  The nanomachines not only helping to sync her with the Cairn Freya, they are supporting her body which has become frail from years of malnutrition and overall the neglect of her overseers.  She fights to protect the research outpost she calls home, but can't remember why she does it, she only knows that if she leaves she will die.  The Freya is a colorless frame composed of whites and grays, showing the lack of imagination of its creators and her captors.  However dull it's chroma may be, it doesn't lack in firepower, speed, or ingenuity.  It does posses a weapon of great strength and use; the EM Manipulator Cache System.  Using 3's unique body and mind to control its system and focus it's power, anything can become it's weapon.  Well that's some of the backstory to the Cairn Freya.  I think I'm gonna use a MG force impulse mainly for the frame.  We'll see if it works for what I want, might be to thick in spots.  I think it will do for the most part though.  you can see where I used the chest and shoulder pauldrons.  Well I might start this when I finish the Gelbrecht.  I need to do the Grou Mo concept too.  I really like making customs.  Well I hope ya enjoy!

I had a sudden burst of inspiration tonight, so I started the Cairn Freya.  All I have left to do on the Gelbrecht is finish a shoulder pauldron and mod the head, (then do the LED modifications).  I had something in my head pushing me to start this.  So I did and in the last 7 hours of building I finished most of the lower leg.  I am again only making half of the body and casting the other side.  All the parts fit and move together and are so neat.  I took the cylinders from my 1/100 avalanche exia, and I will probably take the other two remaining and use them on the hip and elbows.  I might have to cast them just to have enough.  I also used the white styrene I had and the kit parts I used were yellow, but I liked the yellow accent.  I am of course going to paint everything when it's done and warmer here, but I decided I really like the yellow accents.  I think they will stay.  I will paint them a flatter duller yellow with the salt barrier trick to show weathering, but I really am happy with the coincidence.  Well I am going to be exhausted at work.  Enjoy!

Today I worked on the upper leg armor, the hip skirt, the crotch rough shape, and the head.  I also built a Rail Cannon for the unit.  I drew up a rough idea of what I wanted the head to look like before I started building tonight and I stuck close enough to it.  The gun has four spiked ridges that wind back to accent the barrel.  The crotch piece turned out fine and will be the front part of a reoccurring shape like that of the hip skirt.  The tail end armor will have a similar shape.  I also found the mechanism to make the wings raise and fall and look right in line with the project and so awesome looking.  I will work on it tomorrow maybe.  Wifey wants to watch bleach so maybe I'll get a chance maybe not.  I was thinking that maybe the Freya should have a sword or lance to be all germanic legend and all, so I put the gelbrectht's sword in hand and it looked neat.  Although in the filming the rail gun will be the main gun, and for a melee weapon she will use the EM Telecontroller to use a giant warped steel girder as a crude club.  I thought it would be neater if she just used space debris as weapons since her mech specializes in the EM control.  Well it's coming along.  And no it is not painted for anyone who wants to know.  I just keep finding cool looking yellow parts to add on to the already white styrene.  I will properly airbrush this when the time comes.  Although I will stick with the color scheme of sorts.  Yellow is neato.  Well enjoy!

Thank you very much! I'm just as excited about it. That's my favorite part too. I can't wait to cast it!  I guess I need to finish the top first. I'm glad for your enthusiasm

Thanks a bunch!  I was hoping the head would work.  I'm glad it has done so.  I think I'll add little detail things here and there on it though.  maybe.  Tonight I need to do the upper body and arms.  Maybe some wings.  I have the mechanisms for them, just need to put them together.

Well tonight went well methinks.  I did the forearm, the upper arm, the shoulder, and the shoulder pauldron.  I am satisfied with the shape of everything and it all fits and moves well.  And it all comes off.  I used another of my yellow cylinders, and a couple random vent pieces I found.  I still need to manufacture the backpack wings unit, but the shape of the wings will be roughly the shape of the knee armor, with a different angle and details.  The movement joints will make it look grand.  I also need to do the chest, but in a way that allows for the cockpit to still open and close, and to keep the chest small and in close.  I will think of a design.  I also need to do the rear skirt armor to extend the shape from the crotch to fruition.  hehe that sounds funny.  Enjoy!

Tonight I did the basic shape of the cockpit, and ensured that it opens.  It still needs some shaping and filling, straightening and detail, but he basic shape is there.  I like it.  I also am going to add some rising collars next to the head on the neck/shoulder area that lead back like wings, (not the wings themselves) and help to protect the head and neck area.  I took out the oblique armor also as I want to show some of the skeletal structure.  I might add some in later but I think not.  With the gloss black undercoat and a few different layers of preshading alclads, the skeleton will look neat.  I am growing fond of the pale burnt metal color, but I don't know if I'll use any warm metallics on this or not.  I might actually use that color for the cylinders, but we'll see.  Well I'm sleepy.  Enjoy!

Thanks man.   ;D I did manage to primer the model today.  I didn't get to do the backpack, but I also did a rough line drawing (not sure yet which kits to use for skeletal structure, I have an idea though) of my next project the Gaedrigg Heavy Armor Space Type.  The primer does help to ease my eyes when glimpsing this frame, and gave me an idea of what still needs work.  The good thing about skinny mecha is they are quick to build.  Bigger takes longer.  Meaning my next project might take me over 6 months, whereas this has maybe taken 1.  Not even.  I think this build is going great though, and I want to start casting on the next warm night.  I am anxious to try out my new vacuum chamber and pump my father gave to me, and I would love to show him what I did with it.  Hopefully I will get a chance to build some of the backpack tomorrow, although wifey wants to watch bleach so I dunno.  I'm still in the beginning of season 1 and she's dying to tell me about all the rest cuz she reads the manga.  hehe.  enjoy!

wonderfull :D but it seems to me that shoulder are kinda to bulky. I know that this is isn't a final desgin but if I could sugest something is that either adding more vents (like on the chest - they look awesome) or changing them to something more similar to the shoulders of  GM Custom/Re-Gz/F 91 /Freedom/ Strike E.

I would look neat if the smaler fins on the head were able to move separetly

I love the overall design and concept so i'm trying my best to help you :)

AS for the frame for Gaedrigg how wbout Rick Dias or Zaku II ver. 2.0 J. Ridden's (esxtra thrusters on the legs can be usefull)
With enough tape anything is possible!

I appreciate the input. I think I will add more to the chest area around the neck by the shoulderpads to ease that size difference. I'm glad you like the vents. I took a risk with larger port open vents but it seems to work. I need to straighten out the angles on the chest edges. I might add sensors too. For the gaedrigg I was thinking gelgoog 2.0 arm skeleton with PG zaku ii hands for their size, maybe sazabi or dom frame for the center, and scratch build the legs. I might start from there. Thanks for your suggestions again. I might end up just using some kotobukiya joint parts and scratch building a lot. We'll see. :)

actually I'm doing a mock up with sazabi as the frame, and taking armor off I can totally see the shapes fitting.  Minus the legs which will need to be made separately.  I will use the ball joints though.  The arms and the basic frame will maybe work.  I will need to redo all the armor on the arms, and the chest will be rebuilt, but the basic skeleton may work for the most part.  I'm one step closer now!  hehe.  I also think the moving head fins would be neato, but at this point they are secured and I don't know if I wanna backtrack right now.  Everything seems to work so far, I have so much to do.  Good idea though.  Maybe post casting.

I haven't posted in forever here, as I'm only using gundam frames for what I'm doin, I'm not trying to build "gundams".  I do love their engineering though.  Anyway i thought I'd post an update of where this project is.  I have gotten to the point where I only need to cast the other wing, finish the tail armor, detail up the neck and backpack, and make another hip skirt.  That's for the basic version,  for the wyrd Freya I need to make some detail parts, and new hip skirts.  For the full version and up to date photos of everything go here.

http://www.hobbyfanatics.com/index.php?/topic/29452-1100-cairn-freya-conversion/

The most up to date stuff is on page 4 or 5.  Anyway I'll post just the most up to date photos here now, you can go to the link for the whole WIP.  I basically made one side of the mecha, and then casted it to make parts for the other side.  The wing still needs to be taken apart to cast, which is gonna suck, but it'll be worth it.  Well I still need to post some updates for the other mecha.  For the movie which won't start filming until I finish the 8 mecha I need, I have the designs and most of 6 of them built, but not casted or painted yet.  I am making good progress every day though.  So far I have the V'trall, The mass production Gelbrectht, The mass production gaedrigg, the Cairn Freya, the Cairn Loki, and the Kragg Odin.  I still need to make a mass production paervexis, and the Sol Sepulcher.  I will post everyday on the hobbyfanatics site under the user name thehelmosengine, but I will try to post here as often as I can and remember to.  Thanks again for looking all!
